The story about Fiora Nishi

The Story : The collection journey began with a unique challenge, to create simple, yet striking, handcrafted earrings, inspired by FIORA NISHI’s love for tropical hoops. The vision was to blend the forgotten Dorset Knot with the exquisite art of Indian hand-beading.

The Dorset Knot, a heritage craft from 17th-century England, originated from Abraham Case’s observation of soldiers’ makeshift buttons. By the 1820s, it flourished as a cottage industry, with thousands meticulously crafting "Dorset knobs" from horn or metal rings. However, this intricate skill nearly vanished with the Industrial Revolution, becoming an endangered heritage craft.

Fusing this rigid English structure with fluid Indian embroidery presented numerous trials. Threads slipped, forms collapsed – the Dorset Knot demanded a precise, mathematical tension. Through persistence, we grasped its essence, the knot provided the jewel's strong, historical skeleton, while Indian beading became its vibrant, living soul.

With meticulous care, Indian artisans mastered the knot's disciplined wrap casting. Then, with fine embroidery needles, they began the intricate dance of hand-beading, weaving lustrous pearls or shimmering cut-glass beads directly into the knot's framework. This process became a silent dialogue between Dorset's historical precision and India’s vibrant artistry.

The result is breathtaking: earrings seamlessly merging two distinct histories. They bridge centuries and cultures, transforming an endangered English craft with the timeless beauty of Indian hands. FIORA NISHI is captivated, recognizing not just jewellery, but a profound story of resilience and global artistry woven into every single piece.
